Today I decided to play more with my DSLR, this time I was indoors though. Using a very basice set up (2 bedside table lamps with daylight bulbs in and a stack of things as a ‘tripod’) I snapped away and took some photos, here are the results.
All photos were taken without flash, however because I have nothing yet to use in order to diffuse the light, the pictures are still shiny and bright in places.
This figure is a cheap Sega prize figure and the skin on her is very shiny anyway. This is horribly exagerated by the lighting.
This is quite a noisy shot in the darker areas and the background. I’m still getting used to changing ISO and what nots.
Although the darker areas are noisy at this ISO, I’m really pleased with how crisp and clear the actual subject is.
I’m really falling in love with my DSLR. Even though I’m still very inexperienced, it’s already churning out superior images compared to my old camera. Trouble is, it also picks up details I don’t want to see. Look at all that dust on Maji chan’s shoulders. I could barely see it with my eyes, but the DSLR has no problem showing it up.
I love how the Sony a350 really picked up the softness of this Tatty Teddy. He really looks soft and hugable don’t you think?
The Sony a350 picks up details and textures really well. You can even see the weve of the fabric on Mia’s dress.
I love the details this camera picks up. Her hair is too brightly lit so it is a bit over the top on shine, but I love the details on all the strands of hair.
My readers are going to have to get used to seeing a lot of Kaito around here. He’s just the cutest thing.
The personal post of Haagen Dazs looks so cute with Kaito, besides, it is his favourite.
Time to finish up the leftovers?
Somehow I never end up photographing my figma’s so much, even though they’re totally suited to it.
Expect lots more pic spams while I get to know my camera better, I’m going to be snapping a lot now.

Grats on your new cam :)
you might want to built a lighttent/softbox to diffuse the hard light.
Oh yes a light box is on the purchasing agenda that’s for sure. Sadly it might not be until after Christmas now, since this time of year you end up spending money on family instead.
nice shots. Are still shooting in jpg or have started up in RAW? I remember from your figure.fm post you are still new to dSlrs. You have a knack for this. The kaito upside down in the bucket is hilarious.
A good trick is to set your shutter speed or aperture depending on what then adjust your iso till you can take the shot. That way you don’t have use a super high iso. but nowadays, dslr don’t have much noise up to 400 or so.
Have you figured out your slowest hand held shutter speed yet? Its easy to do. tape a newspaper to the wall and take shots of it lowering the shutter speed each time. examine the shots and you can get idea of where you stand. As you get better, you’ll be able to handhold surprisingly slow shutter speeds.
For a tripod I recommend a joby. its not that pricey, strudy and small. Great for taking close up shots. It can also wrap around objects for some really creative photography.
Sorry for the unsolicited advice. Just wanna help a new photographer out
Unsolicited advice? Not at all. I’m still new to this so I’ll take any advice I can get.
I did shoot in RAW this time and it seems much better, plus I like the way you have more freedom with the image in post processing.
I’m still experimenting with shutter speeds, apertures and such at the moment, its overwhelming, but very fun.
I’m happy my advice is welcomed :)
so here is some more :P
Good job on the RAW processing, the colors all look great. Do you use photoshop to process RAW? Lightroom by adobe is amazing for raw processing. lightroom 2.4 is the current version, but there a lightroom 3 beta out for everyone to test out. Give it a try. Its tailor made for RAW processing/photographers and integrates into photoshop for those extra little touch ups. Its really cool! you can process a entire photo set with a few clicks. It also has a killer library tool, at first I thought it was meh feature, but now that I have several thousand shots on my computer, I’d die without it.
man I sound like such a lightroom fanboy, I guess I am :P
http://joby.com/ I love this tripod. Check it out :)
OH since you like to macro-ish shots, get a remote shutter release. that way you set a low iso and not worry about camera shake. There is a “poor mans” remote shutter release, that I use a lot. set your camera on a 2-5 sec timer, by the time it releases the shutter there should be no shake.
Have you bought on any books on photography? I do not recommend getting those books that “teach” you about your camera. Most of them are called guides. They are just glossy, picture filled version of your manual. Won’t teach you more than the manual will. I liked the tutorial books that described how process raw file and what to do get certain effects and so fourth.
I have been told that I have a tendency to type a lot, sorry. I just can’t help it.
I hope to see more of your photos down the line.
I don’t really know very much about the whole photography thing, but I like the photos <3 And thank you for taking one of Tomoyo, she doesn't get enough love!
